Post flood rapid housing

Kerala faced one of the worst flood in the history after 1924. Ten out of the fourteen districts were badly affected.

More than 13000 houses were totally ruined. It was a complete disaster. The dreams and hard work of people that they put in to build their homes were shattered and they could do nothing. To overcome this situation, we needed a rapid and sustainable innovation that can overcome the current situation. So that is how we got the idea of “Post Flood Rapid House”.

THE DESIGN

  • The design is sustainable, only uses 20 % of materials required(by volume) compared to conventional buildings which also makes it cost affective.
  • Reuses materials from flood affected damaged houses.
  • Follows rapid construction that is, construction of the house only requires 14 days(2 weeks).
  • Uses steel fabrication as the structure which act as the structural system of the house and cement fiber boards which are the skins.
  • The house is flood resistant as it is built on steel columns and materials used are also flood resistant like the cement fiber boards, they absorb water during flood and retains its strength after flood.
  • The basement is raised up to the maximum flood level of the region with the help of Mild steel hollow columns. The walls, ceiling and floors are made with Galvanic Iron hollow pipe as structural member and cement fiber boards as skin.
  • It is a growing design as future expansion can be done.
  • Design is in such a way that it does not affect the natural drainage system of the region.
  • Durable and tough like the conventional houses.
